Instagram Live: A Step-by-step Guide for Businesses

Why Should Instagram Live Be Part of Your Strategy?

Going live is one of the best ways to connect with your followers in a direct, transparent, and authentic way. Unlike pre-recorded Stories, Instagram Live is a totally unedited stream for your followers to tune into and engage with — which can be a great way of showcasing the more human side of your business for your audience to connect with.

And that’s not all. Instagram Live allows your audience to submit their comments and questions in real-time, making it one of Instagram’s most interactive video platforms.

This can be a hugely beneficial tool for building a stronger connection between your brand and potential customers, allowing you to gain valuable feedback and insight — straight from the people that matter most!

Hosting an Instagram Live can also help boost your discoverability on Instagram. For example, every time you go live on Instagram your followers will receive an in-app notification, and your Live will be bumped to the front of their Instagram Stories feed.

With all this in mind, Instagram Live is an awesome tool to promote your products, engage with potential customers, and increase your reach.

TIP: Give your Instagram Live a boost by promoting them on Instagram Stories in advance! Storyboard and schedule your Instagram Stories with Later today, available on all paid plans.

How to Go Live on Instagram: A Step-by-step Guide

Instagram Live is an incredibly easy tool to use! But before you start broadcasting, there are a few administrative items to take care of.

Step 1: Adjust Your Instagram Live Settings

Before you jump into your Instagram Live, it’s a good idea to check your camera settings.

To do so, open the Instagram Live mode view. Then, tap the wheel icon in the top right-hand corner to open your controls.

From here, you can select if you’d like to hide your Live from specific people, along with other tools like which side of the screen you want your camera toolbar to be on.

You can also select one of the icons on the left-hand sidebar to add the title of your Instagram Live, set the audience (either Public or Practice mode), or schedule it for a future time and date.

TIP: Practice mode is a great way to alleviate any technical difficulties or pre-show nerves before you go live (more on that later!).

Step 2: Filter Out Offensive Comments

If you’d rather not see inappropriate words in the comments on your Instagram Live, you can automatically hide offensive comments, and manually filter comments that contain specific words or phrases.

Open your Instagram settings, scroll down to “Privacy,” select “Hidden Words,” and then toggle “Hide comments” from “Off” to “On.”

You can even take it a step further by using the “Advanced comment filtering” option, or manually adding words, phrases, and emojis that you don’t want to see to a list.

And even better, with Instagram’s new “Live Moderator” feature, you can appoint someone to be a moderator during the livestream.

Your moderator will have the power to report comments, remove viewers from the Instagram Live, and turn off comments for a viewer — making one less thing for you to worry about.

Step 3: Check Your Live Stream in Practice Mode

With Instagram’s “Practice Mode” tool you can test out your Live setup in advance.

Before you go live, select the eye icon on the left-hand corner of the screen. Toggle from “Public” to “Practice.” That’s it!

This feature is perfect for ironing out any kinks before you go live to the masses.

Step 4: Go Live

Once you’re happy with your practice session and ready to go live, it’s quite simple.

Tap the “Live” icon at the bottom of your screen to start your broadcast, and get ready for your close up!

Step 5: Use Instagram Live’s Interactive Features

Once your live is underway, you can choose from a number of features to make your broadcast more engaging:

  1. Share questions from your viewers to the screen by tapping the question mark-speech bubble icon at the bottom of the screen. You can only share a question once a viewer has submitted it during the broadcast.
  2. Send a Direct Message to someone about your Instagram Live by tapping the paper plane icon at the bottom of the screen.
  3. Invite someone to co-host your Instagram Live by tapping the person icon at the bottom of the screen.
  4. Apply an Instagram Stories filter to your broadcast by tapping the filter icon on the right-hand side of the screen.
  5. Tap “Comment” to add a comment to the live stream. You can also pin a comment to the top of the feed by tapping and holding it.
  6. Disable your video feed by tapping the camera icon on the right-hand side of the screen.

You can also share an image or video to your broadcast screen.

First, tap the picture icon in the top right-hand corner of the screen:

Then, choose an image or video from your photo library:

TIP: Use this feature to share educational content like an infographic or a collection of recent photos. Think of it as giving a mini live presentation!

Step 6: End the Live Broadcast

Once your Live is over, tap “End” in the top right corner and then “End Now” to confirm.

From here, you can tap the save icon in the top left to save it to your camera roll to re-use elsewhere. You can choose a cover, write a caption, add a location, and tag other users.

We love repurposed content.

How to Host a Great Instagram Live

Now that you know how to go live, we can dig into what makes for a really great strategy!

Here are our top 6 tips for hosting next-level Instagram Lives that drive real value for your brand:

Tip 1: Hype Up Your Instagram Live in Advance

Regularly and strategically promoting an upcoming Instagram Live can make all of the difference when it comes to securing those all important views!

You can now schedule an Instagram Live up to 90 days in advance, which is great for building hype and creating more of an “event” out of your upcoming broadcast.

By scheduling a Live, you can share reminders and countdowns directly to your their Instagram Stories and feed.

Tell your audience what they can expect in the live broadcast, and invite them to share any questions they have in the comments. This can help your followers feel more engaged, and ultimately more likely to tune in.

Tip 2: Go Live When Your Audience is Most Active

Going live when your followers are most active is one of the easiest ways to make your Instagram Lives more successful.

But how can you predict when your audience will be online ahead of time? The best way to do this is by studying historical data trends to understand when your audience are typically most active on Instagram.

Take a look at your Instagram insights. Under the Audience tab, you’ll find a breakdown of when your followers are most active online broken down by day of the week and time of day.

And if you’re looking for even more detail, you can use your Later Analytics to hone in on your audience’s behaviors.

Your Later analytics dashboard has a super-detailed breakdown of when your audience is online — and you can use that info to tailor your Instagram Live schedule.

PRO TIP: Use Later to discover your best time to post based on audience engagement trends! Upgrade now to find the best days and times to post on Instagram for maximum engagement.

Tip 3: Consider Your Lighting and Location

Planning the location and lighting for your Instagram Live can have a huge impact on how professional your broadcast looks.

Consider how the backdrop of your Instagram Live supports your brand’s message. For example, a minimal white setting with plants will create a totally different aesthetic to a wall with scrapbook-style photos on it.

If your brand is fun and playful, consider how to reflect that with your use of color. For example, a bright pop of pastel can instantly shift the tone of your Instagram Live and make it feel more on brand.

In terms of lighting, natural light is always the most affordable (and often the best) option.

Tip 4: Have a Clear Content Plan

As with any video content, it’s super important to have a clear vision of what you’re going to cover in your Instagram Live broadcast. Having a clear plan will help prevent any awkward pauses, and will also make sure you’re hitting all the important points for your business agenda.

One of the best ways to plan your live stream is to think of it as having a beginning, middle, and an end — or more specifically, an introduction, focal point, and conclusion — and making a note of the most important messages to get across during the broadcast.

It’s also a good idea to consider what could go wrong in a “worst case scenario.” For example, if your live broadcast relies on viewers’ questions, have a backup plan in case you don’t receive any. This could be a list of questions that you’ve gathered earlier from Instagram Stories, or an alternate talking point.

Tip 5: Introduce Branded Elements

One of the main advantages of going live on Instagram is that you’re providing an unedited and direct channel for your audience to engage with your business.

However, that doesn’t mean that you can’t introduce some branded elements to make your live broadcast feel more aligned with your brand values.

This could be as simple as having cue cards in your brand color palette, holding a branded mug, or choosing a backdrop that fits with your creative aesthetic.

Watch our TikTok video to discover exactly how to do this here:

TIME-SAVING TIP: Add your customized templates to a dedicated folder so you can easily find and select them during your live broadcast!

Tip 6: Keep Your Business Goals Front and Center

There are hundreds of reasons to go live, so nailing down what matters the most can help keep your broadcast focused, effective, and measurable!

This could be building hype around the launch of a product, spreading the news about an important company update, getting real-time customer feedback, driving sales for an existing product line, or positioning your brand as an expert on a certain domain.

With clearly defined goals, you can regularly step back and make sure your Instagram Live content plan is fully supporting them.

How to Get Your Video Content Shared on Social Media

social media content

Social media has been around for some time now and with more and more people joining social media platforms every day. It is also why social media has become a favoured spot for marketers of different shapes and sizes to promote their content, products, and services.

As any good marketer knows social media; Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube are nothing if content sharing doesn’t drive them. One could even go as far as saying that the share button is the backbone of the entire social media operation.

With that said, here are some tips on how to get your video content shared on social media.

Keep them Short

Even though video content, by its very nature, is more easily consumed by your audience than text posts, this doesn’t mean that people want to see a full-length movie. Each social media platform has its optimal video length.

Repurpose Blog Posts

If you’re reading this, the chances are that you are already writing blog posts on a regular basis. If this is the case, then you can repurpose some of those blog posts into short videos. Use Google Analytics and other such tools to track your best performers.

If that material did well in writing, it could also do great as a video. Older videos can also be repurposed.

Go for Quality Videos

Every one is reasonably conscious of the fact that the video and audio quality is an important part to play when it comes to viewer engagement and share-ability. You don’t have to break the bank to produce these videos and it’s advisable to either invest in some filming equipment or hire a team of professionals to help you out.

Conclusion

In short, social media and video content work exceptionally well together. If you are not already on this train, you are missing out. By investing in video content and using these simple tips above, you can go a long way.

7 Tips For Shooting Awesome Wedding Video

Videography can be extremely stressful. Here are some tips to help you focus on getting all the right shots.

The difference between a good wedding filmmaker and a great one doesn’t come down to having the best camera or gear. The difference is you. Are you the type of person that a couple wants to have attend their wedding? These are a few ways you can make yourself a better wedding videographer.

1. Communicate with the couple, venue, and vendors.

Well before the wedding date, you should have a sit-down meeting with the engaged couple. Get to know what they are looking for in their video. Do they want to make sure you capture certain moments? Will there be any surprises or choreographed dances you need to know about? Will the bride be wearing her Great-Great Grandmother’s earrings? Being ready to capture these moments will truly make your work stand out.

Reach out to the ceremony and reception venues and find out if they have any rules or regulations. Many churches won’t allow videographers in certain areas, so it’s important to note if you will need to bring a zoom lens. Some large reception venues require a proof of insurance before they let you shoot on the premises. It’s your responsibility to have everything in order before showing up.

Talk to some of the vendors, mainly the ones you will work with on the wedding day. Knowing vendors in the industry is your gateway to success. Their recommendations can help you land future weddings. First get to know the Wedding Coordinator. Ask for a copy of the schedule and contacts for the other vendors. Then you can ask the DJ about their setup. Will they let you plug into their sound board to get backup audio? Will they bring a high end light kit for the reception? See if the photographer is willing to collaborate with you. Can you shoot side by side and rotate for closeups? Getting acquainted with everyone will help the shoot move along much smoother.

 2. Stay fast while carrying as little gear as possible.

Bonus tip: Don’t wear shorts to a wedding. Otherwise you might look like the odd one out in the video.

The morning of a wedding is a fairly typical operation. The groom and his groomsmen hang out, the bride and bridesmaids get their hair and makeup done. After that, you will be running around until the wedding is over. So it’s best to set the heavy bag in the corner and take it easy on your shoulders and back. Only carry what you need.

Having every lens option at once is no use to you. A camera and two lenses are perfect for running around. Be sure to have extra batteries and formatted memory cards ready to go. Nothing is worse than having to tell the couple to hold off on tossing the bouquet because your batteries died. I’ve seen it happen. Don’t be that person. If necessary, find an outlet and have a charging station for any batteries you have already used.

 3. Audio is crucial, have backups ready.

There are no re-“I Dos” in weddings. If you don’t capture things as they happen, then you didn’t do your job. It’s best to have multiple audio sources recording. Does your camera capture quality sound? If not, have external recorders ready to go. Try to avoid putting the mic on a bride, instead go for a lavalier microphone on the officiant or groom.

If the DJ is running sound, you may be able to plug into their sound board. That’s why it is beneficial to have talked to the DJ before hand. Keep in mind every DJ is different, so it’s no guarantee that you will get quality sound. That’s why you should only rely on them for backup audio.

 4. Always capture the traditional wedding shots.

You may feel the need to experiment on the wedding day, but be sure to always get the typical wedding shots too. Experimenting is a great way to help you find your style, but don’t forget that couples want to see their vows, first dance, and cake cutting. Make sure you have the important things covered before you get all those cool transition shots.

 5. Keep the camera stable.

Stabilization is necessary. Going handheld is not going to cut it. Whether you use a tripod, monopod, glidecam, slider, or a shoulder rig, be sure that you can quickly switch between your support gear. By putting the same quick release plate on all of your gear, you can easily switch on the go.

Tripods are great during the ceremony, but can easily get in the way elsewhere. When you’re in a tiny hotel room with the entire bridal party, family members, hair stylists and makeup artists, you won’t have much space to work. Being able to quickly switch to a monopod or glidecam will keep you shooting.

 6. Be sure to capture enough B-roll.

B-roll will be your best friend and worst enemy when editing. Not having enough will make you job much harder. It’s easy to remember to shoot exteriors of the venue, but don’t forget that there are people coming to these venues. When the bride and groom watch their wedding video, they will want to see their friends and family in attendance.

Have an extra camera capture parts of the crowd during the ceremony.  This footage will always come in handy to hide any rough edits. It’s also great to cut to the crowd if the photographer walks into your shot of the couple at the altar.

 7. Prepare for low light situations.

Evening receptions can be a nightmare for wedding filmmakers. Indoor or outdoor, it will probably be dark. After dinner is served, venues dim the lights so the party can begin.  Hopefully you and the DJ also talked about his light setup, but you will still need your own lights to help you get certain shots.

If your camera doesn’t handle low light well, keep in mind that guests don’t want to be blinded by video lights all night. When you use lights, be sure to use them sparingly. Don’t kill the mood by leaving them on during the entire reception.

The Complete Wedding Video Guide: Ideas, Tips, and More

Proposal Video

About to pop the question? If you’re looking for a proposal idea that’ll take their breath away, propose with a video. Even if you don’t go with a video proposal, you can still turn to video to document the moment. Ask a friend or a photographer to capture your proposal and maybe the same person for your wedding. Then share an engagement slideshow or proposal recap to announce your engagement. If you’re using Animoto, you can start with our Engagement Slideshow video template and then customize your video however you like.

DURING THE WEDDING

Wedding ceremony slideshow

It only takes a few minutes to grab ceremony photos and turn them into a slideshow for your reception. Make sure you have a screen and projector or large TV ready. Then upload your photos onto a laptop. Add them to Animoto and in a few minutes you can have a beautiful slideshow ready for your reception.

Video booth

Make the photo booth even more fun by adding a component. Let guests share their well wishes for the new couple or just get silly with props. You can even create a DIY video booth with a mounted tablet.

Even if you’re sticking to a photo booth, you can share your favorites in a quick video you can share on social media after the ceremony.

Wedding favors

Video can make a sweet wedding favor or thank you gift for bridesmaids and groomsmen. Take a look at a few of the ways you can package a wedding video as a gift. Give a general thank you to attendees or a personalized message, letting them know how much their love and support means to you. Then share your video in an elegant way. For instance, you could gift your video in a USB box like the one below from Same Day Flash.

AFTER THE WEDDING

Honeymoon video recap

Turn your honeymoon photos and clips into a video album you can come back to for years to come. Or just give loved ones a post-wedding update on your honeymoon with a video you share on social media. Either way, get our tips for recapping your honeymoon with video.

Anniversary slideshow

Whether it’s your first anniversary or your 25th, this is a thoughtful way to show you’re still head over heels in love. Check out our post on making an anniversary gift to get tips for creating your own anniversary video. A slideshow can also be a way to celebrate a big anniversary milestone, say if you’re throwing a party for a couple’s 50th anniversary. If you are presenting your clip at a party, take a look at a few ways you can show your clip on a TV or through a projector.

SELECTING AN AMATEUR VIDEOGRAPHER

You’ll be busy getting married on your day, so if you go for a DIY wedding clip, make sure you plan out who’ll be in charge. Designate one or more attendees as the videographer and get them any equipment they might need on your wedding day. Here are some options to consider when deciding on how your video will be shot:

  • Designate a guest as your videographer.
  • Hire a student to take care of your video. It’ll reduce costs and free up guests to enjoy the festivities.
  • Let guests take clips and photos during the day of your wedding and retrieve everything after the event. Take a look at this blog post to discover different ways you can collect footage and photos from guests.
  • Give a few guests mobile cameras, like a GoPro, to capture the action. You can even get creative and add a camera to a bouquet or other wedding-day items to get a unique view of events.
  • Microphone: This fits under the nice-to-have column. You’ll

Hiring a videographer

Professional wedding videography can ensure that every movement on your wedding day gets preserved in a beautiful, well-crafted clip. But if you’re looking to hire a pro, there are a few things to consider.

QUESTIONS TO ASK YOUR VIDEOGRAPHER

When you’re interviewing potential wedding videographers, make sure you know exactly what they offer. Here are a few questions you can ask before saying “I do” to your videographer.

  • Are you available on the date of our wedding?
  • Do you offer any packages? What’s included in your packages?
  • Have you worked with our photographer before?
  • How long will you be filming?
  • How many videographers will be there on the day of the wedding?
  • How long will it be?
  • Will it include audio?
  • How do you choose music for a wedding clip?
  • When can we expect the video to be ready?

WEDDING VIDEO PRICES

Like many aspects of a wedding, there is a lot of variety in wedding videography pricing. Before you settle on a videographer, here are a few cost-related things to think about:

  • Set a budget: Before you start talking to a videographer, think about how much you can set aside for your wedding videography.
  • Ask about packages: Some videographers will give you a la carte pricing and others will have packages that can bring down costs.
  • Read over your contract: Make sure everything you want is included. Be very clear on what you’re getting. If it’s not in the contract, you can’t expect it on your wedding day.

Sign your contract quickly: Though you should take time to read it over, don’t wait too long to sign a great videographer! They might get snapped up by another couple.

5 Steps To Run A Successful Video Blog

Creating a strong web presence is essential for businesses to survive today. Blogging is an easy and cheap method to improve your visibility, generate traffic for your website, enhance SEO, and generate leads. When blogging meets video, it simply takes the power of your blog a step farther.

Almost 87% of the marketers are already using videos and 51% of them report that the videos deliver the best ROI of all content. Blogs with videos have 3 times as many inbound links than those without.

These statistics give ample reason for you to start creating vlogs. So, let’s dive into the steps to run a successful video blog!

What Goes Into A Successful Video Blog?

If you have shied away from video blogging so far, it is time that you consider including it in your content marketing strategy.

5 Useful Tools to Make Your Video Blog Extremely Successful

If you already have a vlog and know the basics but are looking to make it more effective and engaging, the first thing to do is to take a close look at your equipment. While it doesn’t have to be expensive, state-of-the-art equipment, it needs to be good enough to produce good-quality videos. The equipment that you choose to buy will depend much on your content and where you intend to shoot. Keep that in mind before you purchase.

1. Use a good microphone

The importance of clear audio cannot be ignored. Hence, investing in a good microphone is important for your video blog.

Do not rely on the inbuilt microphone in your camera as it may not deliver the quality you’re looking for. Use one that is compatible with the environment in which you would be doing most of your recording.

Do explore the sound quality, connectivity, and ease of use.

There are different microphones in different environments and for indoor recording and outdoor recording. The same microphone will produce completely different sound quality indoors than it would outdoors. A decent microphone with audio-balancing features is not awfully expensive but will make a world of difference to your audio quality. Good-quality microphones cost $100 or lesser. Do explore the sound quality, connectivity, and ease of use.

There are many different kinds of microphones available depending on the device and the location you use for recording. The most versatile according to us are lavalier microphones. They can be used with most devices including smartphones and the DSLR cameras. Two good-quality microphones are Boya by M1 and Audio-Technica ATR3350iS.

2. Invest in a good camera

Professional-looking videos do not require a very expensive camera. While buying a camera, keep in mind the environment where you will be shooting and buy the camera according to your requirements.

There are a few things that you should keep in mind – make sure that the camera you pick has decent battery life. It should be lightweight and have ample storage capacity to record long videos. On the other hand, most smartphones have cameras that record good-quality videos and you can use them in an emergency.

3. Ensure that there’s proper lighting

Lighting affects the user experience. When shooting outdoors, there is little you can do to adjust the light except to make sure that the sun is not behind you. Working indoors you will need to create the right lighting to make the video look professional and the subject clearly visible.

Cameras perceive light differently than our eyes and require more light than we think to capture great images. For indoor shoots, it is best to use a 3-point lighting setup with a key light, fill light and backlight, used together to create the right lighting.

4. Be personal and engaging

Most successful video bloggers have a great personality that shines out, creating an instant connection. Keep this in mind when you start creating video blogs. It’s important to be authentic, conversational, convincing and even funny. Prepare well before you start filming as everything reflects directly on your brand. Pick out different, relevant topics for your videos to sustain your audience’s interest.

This vlog by HubSpot on how to increase your organic reach on Facebook is a good example of being authentic and personal on camera.

Here’s another great example by Wistia on how to write a video script. It shows how sounding natural and witty can help you win at video blogging.

5. Focus on providing value to your audience

Providing value to your audience should be the foremost consideration while creating a video blog. Think about what you are going to talk about in your blog before you begin and keep these points in mind:

The audience needs an incentive to watch your video blogs, so they need to be informative and entertaining. Look for topics that resonate with your audience and talk about things that interest them.

Why Use YouTube?

youtube video google

YouTube is the 2nd largest search engine next to Google. People upload more than 100 hours of video per minute to YouTube. It’s one of the best ways to communicate to a wide audience, whether you’re promoting programs or providing information to students. Here are a few reasons why YouTube is great.

Improve your Search Engine Optimization

Google and other search engines tend to favour clips, so sharing video via YouTube with good titles, descriptions and tags is a great way to improve your search engine ranking.

Powerful Branding

This is a fast and effective way to convey your brand messages and people respond well to visual cues for capturing the emotion and physical attributes of what you’re promoting.

Show, Don’t Tell

Video is a great way to demonstrate concepts that are not easily explained in text form and show your students through screen capture clips, live demonstration or even drawing on a white board.

Get Your Message to a Wider Audience

Not only is YouTube the most popular platform on the planet, videos themselves are highly shareable and consider how often you see videos go in your Timeline on Facebook. How often do people email you videos?

You Don’t Need a Huge Budget

There is some merit in having certain types of videos produced by professionals, not every clip needs a 6 figure budget. You can create effective videos of lectures and demonstrations, and more quickly and easily with minimal equipment.

YouTube in the Classroom

A study by Pearson Education, found that YouTube is the most common social media to communicate with students. Not surprising, this communication tool provides an alternative to traditional methods of sharing information, including lectures, podcasts, and current news.

How to Make YouTube Shorts: Everything You Need to Know

youtube video

Since launching in 2005, YouTube has been home to countless video trends and many forms of entertainment. Who remembers Charlie Bit My Finger, David After Dentist, and the still very relevant Leave Britney Alone?

The team behind one of the most visited websites has hopped on the short-form video bandwagon by creating Shorts. These 15-60 second shorts are designed to entertain audiences and help brands and creators drive engagement.

What are YouTube Shorts?

YouTube Shorts are short-form, vertical content created using a smartphone and uploaded directly from the app.

Viewers of your Shorts can share, comment, like, dislike, or subscribe to your channel while viewing the video. The content doesn’t disappear and remains on YouTube, unlike other short-form shorts apps like Instagram Stories and Snapchat.

Why try YouTube Shorts?

Initially launched in India on Sept 14th, 2020, and rolled out across the U.S. on March 18th, 2021, YouTube Shorts quickly surpassed 6.5 billion daily views globally.

YouTube’s VP of Product Management described the video format as “a new short-form short experience for creators and artists who want to shoot short, catchy videos using nothing but their mobile phones,” and goes on to say, “Shorts is a new way to express yourself in 15 seconds or less”.

YouTube’s attempt at short-form video content isn’t a far cry from other ephemeral videos on social media, including TikTok, Instagram Reels, Instagram Stories, Snapchat Spotlight, and even Twitter Fleets and LinkedIn Stories (RIP).

But, what sets Shorts apart is its ability to convert viewers into subscribers for your channel, a must-do for brands and creators.

When you’re setting up Shorts, you can create an entirely separate channel for your Shorts or place the Shorts widget in your main channel. But we recommend keeping your Shorts on your main channel. This is because aligning your main feed YouTube content and your Shorts content in one place will make it easier for your audience to stay engaged with your shorts and give them more opportunity to hop from Shorts to YouTube shorts and ultimately subscribe to your channel

Viewers can find your Shorts by tapping Shorts at the bottom of the app.

Alternatively, audiences can access Shorts:

  • On the YouTube homepage
  • On your channel page
  • Via notifications

Starting a blog can seem overwhelming and intimidating. This free guide is all about blogging for beginners, and will teach you how to become a blogger with just the most basic computer skills. So whether you’re 8 or 88, you can create your own blog in 20 minutes.

You can benefit from more than a decade of my experience so that you don’t repeat these same mistakes when you make your own blog. I created this free guide so that a complete beginner can learn how to blog quickly and easily.

How to Start a Blog in 6 Steps

  1. Pick a blog name. Choose a descriptive name for your blog.
  2. Get your blog online. Register your blog and get hosting.
  3. Customize your blog. Choose a free blog design template and tweak it.
  4. Write & publish your first post. Share your thoughts with the world. The fun part!
  5. Promote your blog. Get more people to read your blog with the proper marketing.
  6. Make money blogging. Choose from several options to monetize your blog.

Should you start a blog?

One of the misconceptions about starting a blog is that you need to be a great writer to be successful. Nothing could be further from the truth. People read blog sites to get a personal perspective on things, so most bloggers write in a very informal and conversational way.

Many successful bloggers will write about a variety of topics on the same blog, this is because of the format.

In addition, you don’t need to be an expert on any of the topics you write about to have a successful blog. For example, visitors to a cooking blog don’t want to read a textbook from a food scientist, they want to hear the experiences of someone who has actually cooked some real meals, mistakes and all.

To be successful as a blogger there is really just one requirement: a passion for your topic.

At its heart, blogging is about sharing your knowledge with the world. Writing about things that you are passionate about makes the process of starting a successful blog so much easier. As long as you are writing about things that you are genuinely interested in, your passion will shine through and keep your visitors interested.

So why would you go to the trouble of blogging? There are a few reasons:

  • Share your story. A blog allows you to have a voice and be heard. You can share your story with the entire world if you so choose. One of the most common ways blogs are used are as a diary where the blogger writes about their daily experiences so that friends, family, and others can all be a part of their lives.
  • Make money from home. Blogging can be quite lucrative if done correctly. The top bloggers in the world obviously earn quite a bit, but even a part-time blogger can expect to make a nice profit if things are done correctly. The best part about it is that blogging is a form of passive income, since you can spend just a few hours a week writing a piece of content and then continue to profit from it long after the the writing is finished. I go into much more detail on how to blog for money later in this guide.
  • Recognition for yourself or your business. No, you probably won’t have paparazzi following you around because of your latest post. But a successful blog makes your idea into a reality, and can gain you a ton of recognition in your respective field. Many bloggers are known as experts just because of their blogs, and some have even gotten book and movie deals based on their blogs.
  • Find a community. Blogging at its heart is interactive. You write a post and people comment on it. This is a good way to connect with people who are interested in the same things as you are. Blogging allows you to teach these people based on your experience, and it gives you the opportunity to learn from your readers as well.

Step 1: Pick a blog name

If you’ve already got an idea for the name of your blog, you can check to make sure that no one else has already registered it:

Note: You cannot use any spaces or punctuation other than dashes in a domain name.

If you find that the name you wanted is already taken there are a few things you can do:

  • Try a different domain extension.
  • Add small words. Words like “a”, “my”, “best”, or “the”. For example, this site is called TheBlogStarter.com instead of BlogStarter.com.
  • Add dashes between words. For example, scott-chow.com

How to Choose a Blog Topic & Name

If you don’t have an idea for a name already, the first step is choosing your blog topic.

If you’re not sure what to blog about, there are a few ways to find a good blog topic:

  • Life experiences. Everyone has lessons they have learned through life experience. Sharing this knowledge can be incredibly helpful to others in similar situations.
For example, I recently helped a woman start her blog about being a fireman’s wife. She has a lot of experience and knowledge to share with others about this topic, and it has helped her connect with others in similar situations.
Think about the things you have experienced in life. This could be related to your family (example: a blog about being a stay at home mom), work (a blog about experiences dealing with clients), or other life experiences (a blog about dealing with a troubling time such as a disease or divorce, or about a happy time such as preparing for a wedding or a birth of a child).
  • A personal blog. A personal blog is a blog all about you. This will include a variety of topics, from things you do on a daily basis, to random thoughts and musings. This is a great way to share your thoughts with the world without having to stick to just one topic.
  • Hobbies & passions. Hobbies or other interests you are passionate about are a great place to start. Cooking, travel, fashion, sports, and cars are all classic examples. But even blogs about more obscure hobbies can be successful, since the your audience is literally anyone in the world with the internet.

Once you have a topic it’s time to choose your blog name, also known as your domain name.

A good blog name should be descriptive so that potential visitors can instantly tell what your blog is about just from the name.

If you are blogging about one specific topic then you will definitely want to include that in some way when you pick a domain name. Try not to get hung-up on just one word though. For example, a videographers blog doesn’t necessarily have to have the word “videographer” in it. The words “video marketing”, “filming”, and “cameras” would also let people know that your blog is about being a videographer.

A .com domain extension is the most preferred, but .net or .org work as well. It is also important to note that for the purposes of a blog domain you cannot have any spaces between words. So “Blogging with Kelsey” becomes bloggingwithkelsey.com

Step 2: Get your blog online

Now that you’ve got a name picked out it’s time to get your blog online. This might sound hard or technical, but the steps below will walk you right through and make the process easy.

To get your blog up and running you need two things: blog hosting (also known as web hosting) and blogging software. The good news is that these typically come packaged together.

A blog host is a company that stores all of the files for your blog and delivers them to the user when they type in your blog name. You must have a blog host in order to have a blog.

You also need to have the software to build your blog. In this guide I will be showing you how to build a blog using the WordPress blogging software, because it is the most popular, customizable, and easiest to use.

Step 3: Customize your blog

How do I start a blog? You can watch me build and customize a beautiful blog from scratch here:

The video above should answer a lot of questions you might have about how to set up a blog and get it customized. Here is a step-by-step break-down of some of things I show in the video.

Logging in

If you are not already logged-in from the previous step, go to Bluehost.com and click “Login” on the top right to bring up the login screen.  You can then login using your domain name and the password you set in the previous step.  If you have misplaced your password you can reset it by clicking the “Forgot Password” link.

Once you log-in you will be taken to your BlueHost Portal.  From the portal you can click the blue “WordPress” button to be logged-in automatically to your WordPress blog.

Changing your blog design

Once you login you will be in the WordPress dashboard. This is where you can make any changes you want to your blog.

Everyone has a different idea of how they want their blog or video marketing page to look to look. One of the great things about WordPress is that you can change your entire layout and design with just a few clicks.

In WordPress, blog layouts are known as “Themes”. What is a blog theme? Themes control the entire design of your WordPress blog. To change your theme you are going to click on the “Appearance” tab on the left menu.

You will see several free WordPress themes are already installed on your blog: Twenty Seventeen, Twenty Sixteen, etc. These are well-designed, clean-looking themes that can work for just about any type of blog. In fact, many of the world’s top bloggers use one of these themes.

Unless you have a very specific design in mind for your blog, I suggest you use one of these themes to start with. For our example, let’s use the “Twenty Sixteen” WordPress theme. In order to activate the theme on your blog, hover over the theme and click the “Activate” button. That’s it! You have changed the entire design of your blog with just one click!

If you don’t like any of the themes that are already installed you can easily choose from thousands of other free WordPress themes. To install a new WordPress theme, click on the “Appearance” tab on the left menu and then click “Add New Theme”.

This is the WordPress theme search screen.  There are thousands of themes to choose from.  You can change your entire design at anytime simply by activating a new WordPress theme.  To find a theme you like, I suggest you click on the “Popular” tab and start browsing. When you find one that you like click the blue “Install” button.

Once the theme is installed click “Activate” to activate the theme on your blog. To see your new theme in action, go to your blog and take a look!

Step 4: How to write a new blog post & publish it

Now that your blog is up and running it’s time to actually do some blogging!  Let’s create your first piece of content.

Go to the left menu and click on “Posts”.

You will see there is already a post there. This is a default post on every new WordPress blog, and we don’t need it. To delete it click “Trash” just under the post.

To begin writing a new post, click the “Add New” link.

You are now on the post editor screen. Enter the title of your post in the top box and then begin writing your post in the lower box.

If you would like to add a picture to your post, click on the “Add Image” icon and click “Upload” to upload a picture from your computer. You can make adjustments to the picture size on the next screen. When you are ready click “Insert into post” to add the picture.

Once you have finished your post just click the “Publish” button on the top right side of the screen to publish the new post.

Content That Should be on Your Blog

There are two main types of content your blog should provide: static and dynamic content.

Static Content: Your blog should contain a few necessary pages explicitly designed to provide the visitor with the tools they need. The content on these pages is static, meaning – the content doesn’t change, or at least not very often. These are mainly top-level pages that can be accessed via a menu on your blog.

These static content pages should be in place well before you launch your blog to the world.

Important static pages to include:

  • About Me (Us) – This page should include a biographical summary of the author(s) as well as a mission statement. Think about the answers to these questions: How did your passion for the subject matter develop? What do you want to convey to the world? What is your ultimate goal?
  • Contact Me (Us) – A contact page provides the visitor a place to reach the author which, in turn, provides the visitor with the reassurance that you are a real and reachable author. You can add your physical address, phone number, and custom email address. Or you can utilize a simple contact form to keep your personal identifying information private. You should put links to all of your social media profiles here as well.

Your blog content should be regularly submitted at specific intervals. Waiting months to create content will never build a following. Posting content weekly and driving traffic to these posts will help build your brand.

How to write great blog content

Each post should be lengthy, informative, and engaging. It’s not always easy to come up with new blog and video marketing post ideas on a regular basis and you are free to mix up the tone and even the subject matter to keep things lively and interesting.

Define the Content: Create an alluring post title that stimulates curiosity and encourages clicks. Use the first paragraph of your post to clearly define the topic of your article and provide a possible hook to keep the reader reading.

The Longer the Better – But Break It Up: The more information and detail you include, the better. But visitors will begin to skim if the content contains lengthy paragraphs a mile long, and will pop out faster than they came in. Visitors enjoy tidbits. Keep your paragraphs short with spaces in between, use lists and standout quotes, use images, and always include headings and sub-headings so that visitors can find what they’re looking for.

Engage The Reader: At the end of each post, a common tactic used to engage visitors is posing a meaningful question to your audience and asking them to reply in the comments. This simple measure can increase engagement tenfold.

Original Content: Your content should always be original. Your content should come from your heart, your brain, your knowledge base, and your experience. You can get topic ideas from others in your field, but make sure the content comes from you.

Original Photos: While it is easy to include stock images from free image sites, it is even better to include your own photos and graphic work. Another idea is to take free images and manipulate them with a free photo editor.

Edit Work: The blog content should be sufficiently edited. Nothing says unprofessional like several typographical and grammatical errors. If you need a few refresher courses in grammar, consider using a writing application.

Publishing Your Blog

Even after you have written a post your blog may still be showing a placeholder page.

When you are ready to make your blog public for the first time, just click the “BlueHost” menu at the top left of the menu in your WordPress dashboard then click the blue “Launch” button to remove the placeholder page and launch your blog.

Congratulations! You now know how to start your own blog and publish content!

Step 5: Promote your blog

Creating a well-designed blog and writing great content is just the start. In order to get visitors to your blog you will need spend some time promoting it, especially when you first start.

The strategies below will help get your blog in front of more readers. You don’t need to use every strategy – try out a few and see what works well for you.

Alert Your Inner Circle

The very first people who should become aware of your blog are your inner circle. This includes family, friends, and colleagues within your field. Encourage them to become followers, ask them to mention your new blog, and – most importantly – thank them.

Use Social Media

While you don’t want to overdo it, you still want to create accounts with the “biggies” like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Pinterest, and Instagram.  You should post a link to your newest content on your accounts, but you can also post relevant news and links to other sources that your readers may find interesting.  Don’t forget to use hashtags and engage with your followers!

One of my favourite ways to get visitors to a blog or a video marketing agency is to post links on my social accounts, like Facebook and Twitter. This is great, because not only do your friends see the link, but if your friends share the link with their friends it automatically multiplies your visitors. If you have created high-quality content on your blog then social media is a way for your blog to go viral.

Comment on Other Blogs

Find other blogs and social media for videos in your community and engage with them. Using the comment section, introduce yourself and leave engaging and constructive comments. Many will allow you to leave a link to your blog. After creating relationships with prominent bloggers in your community, you will find yourself within their ranks quickly.

Engage with Your Visitors

When your readers leave comments on your posts, always engage with them. Reply to their comments and questions, give them “likes” and affirmations. When it is obvious that an author cares about his/her community and readership, visitors are naturally encouraged to return.

Collaborate with other bloggers

Become enmeshed in your blogging community by collaborating with respected members of your field. Collaborating includes guest posting, promoting each other’s blogs and products, and regularly interacting through comments and social media.

Post Regularly

Post content regularly. Create an editorial calendar and stick to it. A good blogger posts at least once per week to start. If you have long lapses between posts, your followers will drop off and your growth will be severely hampered. It’s not easy to post on a schedule, but it’s something you absolutely must stick to.

Create an Email List

In addition to getting new visitors to your blog, you will also want to make sure your current visitors are coming back. This is where email marketing plays a big role. By collecting the email addresses of your visitors (with their permission of course), you can then notify them when you post new content on your blog. This keeps people coming back to your blog, which not only gives you more readers over time, it also allows you to build a closer relationship with your visitors.

Step 6: Make money from your blog

Once you have put in the effort of creating great blog content and promoting your blog maybe for a video marketing agency, making money from your blog is actually the easy part.

Blogs have the potential to be extremely lucrative, but don’t assume that you’re going to start making money in the first week, or even in the first month. It could take six months to a year to start seeing a steady stream of income. Blogging takes work and dedication, but once you develop a large enough audience, there are several methods you can employ to monetize your blog.

In 2021, you tuned in to see NASA’s Mars Perseverance Rover land (live!) on Mars, joined together to set a new record for BTS, and took part in the epic storylines that played out across the Dream SMP, a collaborative Minecraft server with an active fandom full of videographers and commentators. You also raised short-form video to new heights, watching new cooking, dental (yes, dental), and magic creators (on youtube) transform traditional entertainment.

6 Benefits Of Blogging On LinkedIn

1. Ready-made traffic

Got your own blog? Good. You will know that attracting readers can be tricky (even for professional videographers and bloggers) , especially in the early days. With LinkedIn you are part of a hive that’s 467 million professionals strong. There are people who want to read your content, and plenty of them. LinkedIn helps you reach them – and that starts with your carefully nurtured network of connections.

2. Boost your exposure (beyond LinkedIn)

Of course, LinkedIn allows your readers to share your content across their other social media channels. You could pick up traffic from Twitter, Facebook and all the rest – even if you don’t actively use those platforms yourself. Easy win.

Good posts with eye-catching headlines and a logical structure can earn your company tens of thousands of views. A post by the CEO of investment company adventur.es is a good example of just what blogging on LinkedIn can do for your brand.

3. Get ranked in Google fast

LinkedIn holds phenomenal clout with the search engines. Publish your content and Google will pick it up pronto. That’s excellent news if you’re writing a piece in response to the latest big story in your industry. When the value of your content lies in its timeliness, LinkedIn will help you maximise the opportunity.

4. Build credibility and gain trust

Links to the latest content you publish on LinkedIn are added to the top of your profile. That shows any visitors checking out your profile that you are engaged, knowledgeable and confident enough to make your opinion heard. Ideal for picking up one or two extra credibility points.

5. Drive traffic to your blog

6. Built-in analytics

LinkedIn shows you how many times your content has been viewed, how many shares it’s generated and how many comments readers have felt compelled to leave. That’s useful in any marketer’s book. Especially if you fancy comparing the data with your own blog’s analytics to see which content is working best on each platform.
