Starting a blog can seem overwhelming and intimidating. This free guide is all about blogging for beginners, and will teach you how to become a blogger with just the most basic computer skills. So whether you’re 8 or 88, you can create your own blog in 20 minutes.

You can benefit from more than a decade of my experience so that you don’t repeat these same mistakes when you make your own blog. I created this free guide so that a complete beginner can learn how to blog quickly and easily.

How to Start a Blog in 6 Steps

  1. Pick a blog name. Choose a descriptive name for your blog.
  2. Get your blog online. Register your blog and get hosting.
  3. Customize your blog. Choose a free blog design template and tweak it.
  4. Write & publish your first post. Share your thoughts with the world. The fun part!
  5. Promote your blog. Get more people to read your blog with the proper marketing.
  6. Make money blogging. Choose from several options to monetize your blog.

Should you start a blog?

One of the misconceptions about starting a blog is that you need to be a great writer to be successful. Nothing could be further from the truth. People read blog sites to get a personal perspective on things, so most bloggers write in a very informal and conversational way.

Many successful bloggers will write about a variety of topics on the same blog, this is because of the format.

In addition, you don’t need to be an expert on any of the topics you write about to have a successful blog. For example, visitors to a cooking blog don’t want to read a textbook from a food scientist, they want to hear the experiences of someone who has actually cooked some real meals, mistakes and all.

To be successful as a blogger there is really just one requirement: a passion for your topic.

At its heart, blogging is about sharing your knowledge with the world. Writing about things that you are passionate about makes the process of starting a successful blog so much easier. As long as you are writing about things that you are genuinely interested in, your passion will shine through and keep your visitors interested.

So why would you go to the trouble of blogging? There are a few reasons:

  • Share your story. A blog allows you to have a voice and be heard. You can share your story with the entire world if you so choose. One of the most common ways blogs are used are as a diary where the blogger writes about their daily experiences so that friends, family, and others can all be a part of their lives.
  • Make money from home. Blogging can be quite lucrative if done correctly. The top bloggers in the world obviously earn quite a bit, but even a part-time blogger can expect to make a nice profit if things are done correctly. The best part about it is that blogging is a form of passive income, since you can spend just a few hours a week writing a piece of content and then continue to profit from it long after the the writing is finished. I go into much more detail on how to blog for money later in this guide.
  • Recognition for yourself or your business. No, you probably won’t have paparazzi following you around because of your latest post. But a successful blog makes your idea into a reality, and can gain you a ton of recognition in your respective field. Many bloggers are known as experts just because of their blogs, and some have even gotten book and movie deals based on their blogs.
  • Find a community. Blogging at its heart is interactive. You write a post and people comment on it. This is a good way to connect with people who are interested in the same things as you are. Blogging allows you to teach these people based on your experience, and it gives you the opportunity to learn from your readers as well.

Step 1: Pick a blog name

If you’ve already got an idea for the name of your blog, you can check to make sure that no one else has already registered it:

Note: You cannot use any spaces or punctuation other than dashes in a domain name.

If you find that the name you wanted is already taken there are a few things you can do:

  • Try a different domain extension.
  • Add small words. Words like “a”, “my”, “best”, or “the”. For example, this site is called TheBlogStarter.com instead of BlogStarter.com.
  • Add dashes between words. For example, scott-chow.com

How to Choose a Blog Topic & Name

If you don’t have an idea for a name already, the first step is choosing your blog topic.

If you’re not sure what to blog about, there are a few ways to find a good blog topic:

  • Life experiences. Everyone has lessons they have learned through life experience. Sharing this knowledge can be incredibly helpful to others in similar situations.
For example, I recently helped a woman start her blog about being a fireman’s wife. She has a lot of experience and knowledge to share with others about this topic, and it has helped her connect with others in similar situations.
Think about the things you have experienced in life. This could be related to your family (example: a blog about being a stay at home mom), work (a blog about experiences dealing with clients), or other life experiences (a blog about dealing with a troubling time such as a disease or divorce, or about a happy time such as preparing for a wedding or a birth of a child).
  • A personal blog. A personal blog is a blog all about you. This will include a variety of topics, from things you do on a daily basis, to random thoughts and musings. This is a great way to share your thoughts with the world without having to stick to just one topic.
  • Hobbies & passions. Hobbies or other interests you are passionate about are a great place to start. Cooking, travel, fashion, sports, and cars are all classic examples. But even blogs about more obscure hobbies can be successful, since the your audience is literally anyone in the world with the internet.

Once you have a topic it’s time to choose your blog name, also known as your domain name.

A good blog name should be descriptive so that potential visitors can instantly tell what your blog is about just from the name.

If you are blogging about one specific topic then you will definitely want to include that in some way when you pick a domain name. Try not to get hung-up on just one word though. For example, a videographers blog doesn’t necessarily have to have the word “videographer” in it. The words “video marketing”, “filming”, and “cameras” would also let people know that your blog is about being a videographer.

A .com domain extension is the most preferred, but .net or .org work as well. It is also important to note that for the purposes of a blog domain you cannot have any spaces between words. So “Blogging with Kelsey” becomes bloggingwithkelsey.com

Step 2: Get your blog online

Now that you’ve got a name picked out it’s time to get your blog online. This might sound hard or technical, but the steps below will walk you right through and make the process easy.

To get your blog up and running you need two things: blog hosting (also known as web hosting) and blogging software. The good news is that these typically come packaged together.

A blog host is a company that stores all of the files for your blog and delivers them to the user when they type in your blog name. You must have a blog host in order to have a blog.

You also need to have the software to build your blog. In this guide I will be showing you how to build a blog using the WordPress blogging software, because it is the most popular, customizable, and easiest to use.

Step 3: Customize your blog

How do I start a blog? You can watch me build and customize a beautiful blog from scratch here:

The video above should answer a lot of questions you might have about how to set up a blog and get it customized. Here is a step-by-step break-down of some of things I show in the video.

Logging in

If you are not already logged-in from the previous step, go to Bluehost.com and click “Login” on the top right to bring up the login screen.  You can then login using your domain name and the password you set in the previous step.  If you have misplaced your password you can reset it by clicking the “Forgot Password” link.

Once you log-in you will be taken to your BlueHost Portal.  From the portal you can click the blue “WordPress” button to be logged-in automatically to your WordPress blog.

Changing your blog design

Once you login you will be in the WordPress dashboard. This is where you can make any changes you want to your blog.

Everyone has a different idea of how they want their blog or video marketing page to look to look. One of the great things about WordPress is that you can change your entire layout and design with just a few clicks.

In WordPress, blog layouts are known as “Themes”. What is a blog theme? Themes control the entire design of your WordPress blog. To change your theme you are going to click on the “Appearance” tab on the left menu.

You will see several free WordPress themes are already installed on your blog: Twenty Seventeen, Twenty Sixteen, etc. These are well-designed, clean-looking themes that can work for just about any type of blog. In fact, many of the world’s top bloggers use one of these themes.

Unless you have a very specific design in mind for your blog, I suggest you use one of these themes to start with. For our example, let’s use the “Twenty Sixteen” WordPress theme. In order to activate the theme on your blog, hover over the theme and click the “Activate” button. That’s it! You have changed the entire design of your blog with just one click!

If you don’t like any of the themes that are already installed you can easily choose from thousands of other free WordPress themes. To install a new WordPress theme, click on the “Appearance” tab on the left menu and then click “Add New Theme”.

This is the WordPress theme search screen.  There are thousands of themes to choose from.  You can change your entire design at anytime simply by activating a new WordPress theme.  To find a theme you like, I suggest you click on the “Popular” tab and start browsing. When you find one that you like click the blue “Install” button.

Once the theme is installed click “Activate” to activate the theme on your blog. To see your new theme in action, go to your blog and take a look!

Step 4: How to write a new blog post & publish it

Now that your blog is up and running it’s time to actually do some blogging!  Let’s create your first piece of content.

Go to the left menu and click on “Posts”.

You will see there is already a post there. This is a default post on every new WordPress blog, and we don’t need it. To delete it click “Trash” just under the post.

To begin writing a new post, click the “Add New” link.

You are now on the post editor screen. Enter the title of your post in the top box and then begin writing your post in the lower box.

If you would like to add a picture to your post, click on the “Add Image” icon and click “Upload” to upload a picture from your computer. You can make adjustments to the picture size on the next screen. When you are ready click “Insert into post” to add the picture.

Once you have finished your post just click the “Publish” button on the top right side of the screen to publish the new post.

Content That Should be on Your Blog

There are two main types of content your blog should provide: static and dynamic content.

Static Content: Your blog should contain a few necessary pages explicitly designed to provide the visitor with the tools they need. The content on these pages is static, meaning – the content doesn’t change, or at least not very often. These are mainly top-level pages that can be accessed via a menu on your blog.

These static content pages should be in place well before you launch your blog to the world.

Important static pages to include:

  • About Me (Us) – This page should include a biographical summary of the author(s) as well as a mission statement. Think about the answers to these questions: How did your passion for the subject matter develop? What do you want to convey to the world? What is your ultimate goal?
  • Contact Me (Us) – A contact page provides the visitor a place to reach the author which, in turn, provides the visitor with the reassurance that you are a real and reachable author. You can add your physical address, phone number, and custom email address. Or you can utilize a simple contact form to keep your personal identifying information private. You should put links to all of your social media profiles here as well.

Your blog content should be regularly submitted at specific intervals. Waiting months to create content will never build a following. Posting content weekly and driving traffic to these posts will help build your brand.

How to write great blog content

Each post should be lengthy, informative, and engaging. It’s not always easy to come up with new blog and video marketing post ideas on a regular basis and you are free to mix up the tone and even the subject matter to keep things lively and interesting.

Define the Content: Create an alluring post title that stimulates curiosity and encourages clicks. Use the first paragraph of your post to clearly define the topic of your article and provide a possible hook to keep the reader reading.

The Longer the Better – But Break It Up: The more information and detail you include, the better. But visitors will begin to skim if the content contains lengthy paragraphs a mile long, and will pop out faster than they came in. Visitors enjoy tidbits. Keep your paragraphs short with spaces in between, use lists and standout quotes, use images, and always include headings and sub-headings so that visitors can find what they’re looking for.

Engage The Reader: At the end of each post, a common tactic used to engage visitors is posing a meaningful question to your audience and asking them to reply in the comments. This simple measure can increase engagement tenfold.

Original Content: Your content should always be original. Your content should come from your heart, your brain, your knowledge base, and your experience. You can get topic ideas from others in your field, but make sure the content comes from you.

Original Photos: While it is easy to include stock images from free image sites, it is even better to include your own photos and graphic work. Another idea is to take free images and manipulate them with a free photo editor.

Edit Work: The blog content should be sufficiently edited. Nothing says unprofessional like several typographical and grammatical errors. If you need a few refresher courses in grammar, consider using a writing application.

Publishing Your Blog

Even after you have written a post your blog may still be showing a placeholder page.

When you are ready to make your blog public for the first time, just click the “BlueHost” menu at the top left of the menu in your WordPress dashboard then click the blue “Launch” button to remove the placeholder page and launch your blog.

Congratulations! You now know how to start your own blog and publish content!

Step 5: Promote your blog

Creating a well-designed blog and writing great content is just the start. In order to get visitors to your blog you will need spend some time promoting it, especially when you first start.

The strategies below will help get your blog in front of more readers. You don’t need to use every strategy – try out a few and see what works well for you.

Alert Your Inner Circle

The very first people who should become aware of your blog are your inner circle. This includes family, friends, and colleagues within your field. Encourage them to become followers, ask them to mention your new blog, and – most importantly – thank them.

Use Social Media

While you don’t want to overdo it, you still want to create accounts with the “biggies” like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Pinterest, and Instagram.  You should post a link to your newest content on your accounts, but you can also post relevant news and links to other sources that your readers may find interesting.  Don’t forget to use hashtags and engage with your followers!

One of my favourite ways to get visitors to a blog or a video marketing agency is to post links on my social accounts, like Facebook and Twitter. This is great, because not only do your friends see the link, but if your friends share the link with their friends it automatically multiplies your visitors. If you have created high-quality content on your blog then social media is a way for your blog to go viral.

Comment on Other Blogs

Find other blogs and social media for videos in your community and engage with them. Using the comment section, introduce yourself and leave engaging and constructive comments. Many will allow you to leave a link to your blog. After creating relationships with prominent bloggers in your community, you will find yourself within their ranks quickly.

Engage with Your Visitors

When your readers leave comments on your posts, always engage with them. Reply to their comments and questions, give them “likes” and affirmations. When it is obvious that an author cares about his/her community and readership, visitors are naturally encouraged to return.

Collaborate with other bloggers

Become enmeshed in your blogging community by collaborating with respected members of your field. Collaborating includes guest posting, promoting each other’s blogs and products, and regularly interacting through comments and social media.

Post Regularly

Post content regularly. Create an editorial calendar and stick to it. A good blogger posts at least once per week to start. If you have long lapses between posts, your followers will drop off and your growth will be severely hampered. It’s not easy to post on a schedule, but it’s something you absolutely must stick to.

Create an Email List

In addition to getting new visitors to your blog, you will also want to make sure your current visitors are coming back. This is where email marketing plays a big role. By collecting the email addresses of your visitors (with their permission of course), you can then notify them when you post new content on your blog. This keeps people coming back to your blog, which not only gives you more readers over time, it also allows you to build a closer relationship with your visitors.

Step 6: Make money from your blog

Once you have put in the effort of creating great blog content and promoting your blog maybe for a video marketing agency, making money from your blog is actually the easy part.

Blogs have the potential to be extremely lucrative, but don’t assume that you’re going to start making money in the first week, or even in the first month. It could take six months to a year to start seeing a steady stream of income. Blogging takes work and dedication, but once you develop a large enough audience, there are several methods you can employ to monetize your blog.

Top Trending Videos And Videographers 2021

In 2021, you tuned in to see NASA’s Mars Perseverance Rover land (live!) on Mars, joined together to set a new record for BTS, and took part in the epic storylines that played out across the Dream SMP, a collaborative Minecraft server with an active fandom full of videographers and commentators. You also raised short-form video to new heights, watching new cooking, dental (yes, dental), and magic creators (on youtube) transform traditional entertainment.

Also making the year’s top trending list: A new survival challenge from MrBeast, the Weeknd’s much memeified performance at the Super Bowl Halftime Show, a hot take on one of the most talked-about games of the year, a scripted morality lesson, a moving musical audition, and a fight against zombies. Oh, and the socially-distanced inauguration of a new U.S. President and VP.

6 Benefits Of Blogging On LinkedIn

1. Ready-made traffic

Got your own blog? Good. You will know that attracting readers can be tricky (even for professional videographers and bloggers) , especially in the early days. With LinkedIn you are part of a hive that’s 467 million professionals strong. There are people who want to read your content, and plenty of them. LinkedIn helps you reach them – and that starts with your carefully nurtured network of connections.

2. Boost your exposure (beyond LinkedIn)

Of course, LinkedIn allows your readers to share your content across their other social media channels. You could pick up traffic from Twitter, Facebook and all the rest – even if you don’t actively use those platforms yourself. Easy win.

Good posts with eye-catching headlines and a logical structure can earn your company tens of thousands of views. A post by the CEO of investment company adventur.es is a good example of just what blogging on LinkedIn can do for your brand.

3. Get ranked in Google fast

LinkedIn holds phenomenal clout with the search engines. Publish your content and Google will pick it up pronto. That’s excellent news if you’re writing a piece in response to the latest big story in your industry. When the value of your content lies in its timeliness, LinkedIn will help you maximise the opportunity.

4. Build credibility and gain trust

Links to the latest content you publish on LinkedIn are added to the top of your profile. That shows any visitors checking out your profile that you are engaged, knowledgeable and confident enough to make your opinion heard. Ideal for picking up one or two extra credibility points.

5. Drive traffic to your blog

6. Built-in analytics

LinkedIn shows you how many times your content has been viewed, how many shares it’s generated and how many comments readers have felt compelled to leave. That’s useful in any marketer’s book. Especially if you fancy comparing the data with your own blog’s analytics to see which content is working best on each platform.

Will 8K Be The Future? Will It It Help Video Production

Should you consider an 8K TV? Are they the best tv’s out there? In a word: No. In two words: Not yet. You’re better off getting a high-quality 4K TV for far less money. It will look better with 99.9% of the content you put on it. That said, 8K is here, and it’s not going away, so it’s worth taking a closer look. You’ll need to look very close, as those pixels are tiny. Now this may increase your video production by using the 8K tv to show your product.

Eventually 8K will be far more mainstream. Does this mean your 4K TV is already obsolete? Should you wait to buy a new TV until 8K prices drop?

This shows the relative number of pixels in each of the major resolution formats. Not actual size of course; this is a chart not a visual representation (though it is to scale if you click on it).

Is it worth buying an 8K TV?

Here’s a quick summary of our current thinking regarding 8K TVs in early 2022.

  • Unless you have money to burn, don’t even consider buying one right now.
  • From what we’ve seen, there’s little, if any, image quality improvement over 4K TVs.
  • To get the most out of any 8K TV, you need actual 8K content (and there basically isn’t any).
  • In the next few years 8K TVs will get cheaper and perhaps actually be worth considering.

To reiterate, one of the biggest reasons 8K TVs are not as amazing as you might expect, besides their price ( less money to spend and more for your video production) is that there simply aren’t any 8K TV shows or movies to watch on them. The best you can get in most cases is 4K, so all those extra pixels of an 8K TV won’t be used to their fullest potential.

Now that you’ve slid your wallet back into your pocket, sit back and soak in everything there is to know about 8K TVs today.

What is 8K, and is it better than a 4K TV?

A traditional HDTV from a few years ago is 1080p, which means it has 1,920 pixels horizontally and 1,080 vertically. Many digital cinema projectors — the ones in movie theaters — have a resolution of 2,048×1,080. Because it’s common in Hollywood-speak to only refer to the horizontal resolution, they call that “2K,” ( so, not to good for your video production) but it’s basically the same as the HDTV 1080p you have at home.

The term “4K” comes from the digital cinema side, too, with a horizontal resolution of 4,096, hence “4K.” However, on the TV side, manufacturing efficiencies meant we got double the horizontal and vertical resolutions of 1080p HDTV, so 3,840×2,160 pixels. Everyone colloquially calls this “4K,” though the technical term is Ultra HD. This has four times as many pixels as 1080p HD.

Which brings us to 8K. You guessed it: twice the horizontal and vertical resolution of 4K, for a whopping 7,680×4,320 and 33,177,600 total pixels. Not only is that four times the resolution of 4K, that’s an incredible 16 times more pixels than 1080p. Or to put that differently, you could put 16 full-resolution 1080p videos on an 8K screen at the same time with no loss of quality. I’m not sure why you’d want to do this, but hey, why not?

What Are 360 Videos? Your Video Production?

Videographers might not be familiar with what 360 videos is, but they have likely seen it before.

It’s the type of spherical video that surrounds your entire view and captures every direction at once.

The technology behind this kind of footage has been around for years, but recent advances to smartphones and VR headsets have made this form of recording easier than ever.

What Is 360 Video?

Recording 360-degree videos can be tricky – if you do not use the right equipment, your camera may have blind spots that cannot be seen in the final product.

This is accomplished by recording the video with multiple cameras and stitching it together.

It’s possible to look up and down at once with 360 video. There are many different ways that people can take 360 videos – by using specialized equipment or just their phone camera.

It can be watched on any device and is used in VR (virtual reality) headsets to allow the viewer to explore or experience the content as if they are there.

But what exactly does this mean? How does it work? Let’s find out!

360 Video Formats

There are many different formats for 360 video ranging from mono to stereo to multi-camera setups.

The most popular type of camera used for 360 videos is an omnidirectional rig (ODR).

How To Watch 360 Degree Video?

Do you want to watch 360 degree video?

Watching a 360-degree video is not the same as watching normal videos on your phone. You need to use VR glasses or download an app that allows you to watch it on your TV screen.

In order for these types of videos to work properly, viewers need to download a special app that allows them access.

If you don’t have either of these, then the next best thing would be googling “360-degree video player” and finding one that works for you.

Why Should I Be Interested In 360° Video Now?

360° cameras are now more affordable than ever and the quality of footage is better than in previous years.

They’re a great way to capture memories, preserve moments that take place away from our screens, or even for those who want to be able to share their life with friends and family all over the world.

Since the beginning of time, humans have been in pursuit of knowledge. As technology has advanced, we have found ourselves with greater access to this knowledge.

This surge in information is now happening exponentially and at a blistering pace—so much so that people are struggling to keep up with what’s happening around them.

The 360° is an immersive video format that has been around for a few years. However, it’s just now gaining popularity with the release of affordable 360° cameras and VR headsets to make viewing these videos more user-friendly.

You can shoot them on your phone or use a device like Ricoh Theta which is small enough to bring anywhere you want! They’re perfect for travel, vacations, concerts and even weddings.

This type of content is perfect for advertising products as it makes viewers feel like they’re experiencing them firsthand with no barriers between themselves and whatever is being shown on screen.

It also has other potential uses such as showing off an event or venue before it opens its doors to guests.

Publishing Your 360° Video Content

It is time to start publishing your 360° content. The days of just posting a video and leaving it there are over, so I’ve compiled some tips for you to get started.

-Plan out the weeks ahead and post on specific days or topics in order to build up an audience  -Use hashtags like #360Video or #VRVideo in order to reach a

wider audience -Engage with your viewers by asking questions and having fun with them via social media such as Facebook Live or Instagram Live!

The way you create and publish your 360° content is just as important as the quality of the photos.

If your images are poorly edited, there will be a lot more work to do in post-production which can lead to less than stellar results.

It’s best to use high-quality editing software such as Adobe Photoshop or Lightroom for raw photo editing and then enhance them with other digital tools like filters, textures, overlays, etc.

Stitching 360° Video

It might be hard to find videos like this, but they are out there.

I’ve been learning about stitching and how it can make these videos possible. In the past few months, I have come across more interesting articles on stitching and learned new things with every one of them.

How can you stitch a 360° video? How do you create an immersive experience for the viewer? These are questions that we will answer in this post. We will go through the steps of stitching, what gear to use, and how to edit your footage so it’s seamless.

If you’re into filmmaking, then 360° video is a must. This article will help you understand the basics of stitching and offer some tips on how to make it work for your next project.

What if you could stitch together images and video from all 360° around you? That is the idea behind stitching.

This blog post will go over what stitching is and how it works as well as some of the different uses for stitching.

The 8-Second Rule Of Video Content Online

The human attention span is impressively short; we can decide if video production agency bothered by something within 8 seconds. Time magazine has recently revealed that attentions spans have dropped by 4 seconds in the past few years. What are the first 8 seconds of your video saying to your audience?

Video production agencys can be your best friend when it comes to boosting brand awareness and marketing. However, it has been revealed that of all your video views. Almost 20 percent of people stop watching during the first 8 seconds.

With this scary thought in mind, you should be looking closely at the first few seconds of your videos.

Think about the impact of your thumbnail. Your audience will make the decision to watch your video based on several factors, and one of the main ones is whether the very first image they see is a pleasing one or not.

Try to use a brand-specific thumbnail, if possible, this is so that your videos are easily recognised by your viewers and clients.

Moving past the still image, try to begin your video without an overly cheesy and cringe-worthy introduction. It is important to tell your viewers what they need to know, but there are many ways of doing this, so if you can try not to cop out and do the easiest and most done to death intro there is.

You also need to avoid the temptation to throw your logo on screen as soon as possible. The first couple of seconds is about engaging with the audience, by slapping your logo in the corner you will be putting off the viewer.

Guerilla Filmmaking

What is guerilla filmmaking?

Guerilla filmmaking (video production) is a shooting style that is done clandestinely with no film permits, limited props, and usually a bare-minimum crew. A filmmaker, AKA a videographer, could find this quite hard to do but its better for the film. This usually means shooting on-location quickly before anyone else notices what’s going on. Prepare beforehand is essential, as is maintaining a low profile. This means not having a big boom mic, lights set up or having too many crew members around when shooting.

Why Guerilla?

The term “guerilla” is taken from the Spanish word for a style of warfare waged between small bands of non-professional soldiers and official government military. In filmmaking, you can see how this idea applies because this filmmaking style is not as organized (or legal) as a normal movie shoot. While a guerrilla shoot can be organized in its own way, it’s still very risky, which is why it’s also nicknamed “run and gun.”

What are guerilla filmmaking characteristics?

  • Skeleton crews
  • Not doing multiple takes
  • Documentary or handheld look
  • Shooting in real locations (without a permit)
  • Less noticeable camera and audio equipment

SHOOTING GUERRILLA STYLE

How do you shoot guerrilla style?

While we do not endorse the shooting and production style of guerilla filmmaking, we can provide you with guerilla filmmaking tips that cover the do’s and don’ts.

Before going into all that, feel free to watch the video below about the do’s and don’ts of guerilla filmmaking from Film Riot.

Useful guerilla filmmaking tips

Guerilla filmmaking is cheaper than most other kinds. Since you can bypass film permits (which means not needing to secure locations):

  • Do use a minimal film crew, and
  • Do shoot your scenes just once (if you can, of course).

Guerilla filmmaking provides you with a freedom you might not otherwise have if you were shooting things “the normal way.”

If you want to shoot in a certain location:

  • Do be prepared ahead of time, get everything ready, and then shoot.
  • Do make sure your crew knows exactly what to do at the time of filming.

However, shooting in a public without a permit has serious drawbacks, so:

  • Don’t film if your location is too crowded with bystanders.
  • Its best not to go to a shoot unprepared for the possible consequences.
  • Don’t get into further trouble with authority figures if they ask you to stop what you’re doing.

There’s a real spontaneity to guerilla filmmaking, which might also be part of the fun or process. The idea is that you only have one chance or two to get something right, so:

  • Do be on your guard at all times; in case someone asks what you’re doing (just say it’s a student film).
  • Do have your schedule set to avoid losing time.
  • Do make sure your entire cast, crew, and equipment can leave the filming area just as soon as you’re done with your shoot.
  • You wont be able to use too many props that might make your shoots harder to manage.
  • Don’t be too ambitious with your locations or budget.
  • Don’t make it too obvious you’re filming, i.e. yelling “ACTION” and “CUT.”

Here’s How To Succeed As An Influencer And To Impress Video Production Studios

Have you ever wonder how social media stars launched their empires? Below, we looked at wide range of people to find out what the daily grind of #influencing is really like that video production companies would be quite impressed.

Shallon Lester

As a full-time YouTuber, Shallon Lester recently relocated to Montana after a decade in New York City. The published author has over 500,000 followers and 70 million video views. After making a viral video series, she began to realize this might be a career. She wasn’t quite ready to quit her job.

“So I created my own channel focusing on dating advice videos for girls and uploaded twice a month,” she said.

In 2019, she filmed a short video production titled “How To Spot A Liar” about Jordyn Woods, Khloé Kardashian and Tristan Thompson’s love triangle. “I realized my niche was taking pop culture news and turning it into something from which we can learn,” .”Two months later, Lester became a full-time YouTuber and hasn’t looked back.

“I have to make sure I have other products and platforms like TikTok and Instagram, etc.,” she said. “I have what I call a ‘business octopus’ with ‘tentacles’ that include books, a podcast, consulting service, trips and retreats, a clothing line, jewellery collaborations.”

Lester cautions that social media in and of itself isn’t really monetizable. “They don’t run ads the way YouTube does. You could have 10 million followers on those platforms, and you’re not going to make a dime,” she said.

David Payette

David Payette is one-half of David from the Payette Forward YouTube channel, which has collected roughly 878,000 subscribers just since 2015. He described his journey to a full-time YouTuber as “circuitous and challenging,” he couldn’t have done it without David Lynch. Payette had been working at the Apple Store before he quit his job, with the intention of starting a business. He wrote a blog post called “Why Does My iPhone Battery Die So Fast? Here’s The Fix!”

Within six months, 5 million people had read the post — the only one he had ever written. “Three months later, I was living on Maui and writing easy-to-read iPhone help articles full-time,” he said. “I started what grew into the largest iPhone help Facebook group later that year. I drew upon that audience to give my new channel a boost.”

In 2016, Payette moved back to New York and met David Lynch now his YouTube co-host. “David had just graduated from college, had his own YouTube channel, and our interests aligned across the board. David became a full-time employee the next year,” he said of his 27-year-old partner in crime.

The duo also makes money through purchases from Amazon affiliate links for headphones that they review. Occasionally, they also do brand partnerships, but Payette says they reject 99 percent of the offers they receive.

Stina Garbis

A psychic tarot reader and TikTok influencer based in Corvallis, Ore., Stina Garbis, 46. Garbis amassed some 203,000 followers on the social media video platform since August 2020. She had been a professional psychic for several years, growing her business through avenues like advertising on Yelp, people finding her locally through Google or word of mouth. “It’s been a sleepy business for me,” she said.

That is, until, “I have a client tell me about TikTok and how she was seeing conflicting tarot readings on the app. Curious, I downloaded the app and was shocked to see how popular tarot is. So I upload a simple video that took a couple of minutes to make, and I am shocked to instantly get 2,500 views. I was instantly addicted and had my first viral video in a month, and my client list began increasing dramatically.”

Samantina Zenon

Actor, author and lifestyle content creator Samantina Zenon, 31, of Woodside, NY, has been at it on social media for the past five years, working with more than 500 international brands. She’s most active on Instagram, where she post short video productions to around 33,000 followers.

“I originally started being a social media influencer as a way to build my brand,” she said. “Over the years it has opened doors to many opportunities for me such as getting invited to exclusive events and New York Fashion Week and collaborating with many luxurious brands such as Yves Saint Laurent, Givenchy, Muggler and many more,” Zenon said.

Christine Carter

Christine Carter, 35 has 80,000 social media followers across platforms and yet still maintains her day job as a goods marketing strategist. Unlike many influencers, she says her secret to success is that she didn’t quit her full-time position.

“In fact, the unique reason why I have such a large following is that I’m an everyday mom just like my followers, working and juggling single parenthood at the same time,” she said. “I decided to start advocating for working moms after becoming one, and having to pump breast milk in a bathroom stall because my employer had no mother’s room,” she said. “I wanted to use social media platforms to share with women their rights as a working parent, and help them through articles, tools and resources to understand that they could remain — and thrive — in the workforce.”

Rachel Binder

Rachel Binder is proof you don’t have to amass a giant following for a lucrative hustle. With some 8,300 Instagram followers and she’s found that they engage enough to support all of her distribution direct-to-consumer. “I sell out of everything that I make,” she said.

She combines a love of wine with her fragrance obsession to make dreamy scent scapes. “I extract fruit aromatics out of actual fruit without the use of synthetics,” she said.
